If you are just starting ballroom dance lessons, one of the most common and natural questions is “what kind of shoes should I wear?”  There are really two things that make dancing difficult as well as increasing the risk of ankle injury:  bare feet and rubber soled shoes or sneakers.  While it would be best if you had ballroom dance shoes, any shoes with leather soles will work.   If you are unsure, bring several pairs to try.  A nice men’s Latin practice shoe is best for support but you could also go with a jazz shoe or ballroom shoe if you prefer.  Sneakers are not recommended because they make it difficult to turn, but a dance sneaker with a suede sole will solve that issue.  Dance lessons will be a whole lot less stressful and a whole lot more fun with the proper practice shoes.
